Happy 4th everyone!!! 🇺🇸
We are thankful to live where we do and have the freedom to raise the animals we do, and grow our food how we want it. To be able to process our own meat. And to not have to report it to anyone.
We know this unfortunately isn’t the case everywhere but here in Old Fort we are thankful for this.
Enjoy your fireworks and stay safe tonight 🎆

Today we had the opportunity to teach a friend how to process ducks! She had extra Muscovy Drakes that needed to go. She’d been wanting to learn and this made for a great learning opportunity! 🦆
The biggest difference in processing waterfowl that we’ve noticed is plucking. The down feathers are a pain to hand pluck! We ended up skinning them since she didn’t care either way if the skin was on or not. Skinning made the job go quicker.
Some benefits to eating duck meat is (like chicken) it is a good source of protein. Duck has a higher iron content than chicken, and is a great source for B vitamins. It is higher in fat than chicken, but it is mono saturated fats which are beneficial to your heart health… so it’s healthy fats! Finally the flavor is so much richer than chicken 🤤
When we help each other, we all win🙂
Then we ended the day by showing our friends Moon’s kids 🥰 Who doesn’t love some baby goat snuggles? 🐐

It’s Summertime and we’re in a heat wave here in East Tennessee! 😅 ☀️
Let’s talk about some ways to help keep your poultry, livestock, and most outside animals in general cooled off.
1. Frozen veggies! We pull whatever is old out of the freezer or pick up big packs cheap at Walmart. You can just toss them on the ground or (what we like to do) throw them in a kiddy pool. 🌽
2. Dust bath spots! Dust bathing helps chickens regulate temperature. They don’t sweat. By throwing dirt all over themselves it helps bring their temperature down. It also is calming for them which will regulate their breathing that can become labored from the high temperatures.
3. Watermelon! It’s not only a great summertime snack for people, animals love it too. Being over 90% water, watermelon is a quick and easy way to get water into the body quickly to hydrate and cool down. It also contains plenty of electrolytes like potassium that are so necessary during this kind of heat. 🍉
4. Kiddy Pools! They aren’t just for kids to play in during the summer lol one of the main ways poultry cool off is through their feet. If you fill a kiddy pool with a few inches of water, and then add some frozen veggies to entice them to get in, it’ll help get their temperature down quicker and encourage them to drink the water too.
5. Fresh Water! This one should seem like a no brainer but just in case you have too much going on right now, here’s a quick reminder to keep fresh water down. If you can put extra bowls down that’s even better. Refill it each morning so it’s clean, topped off, and cool instead of hot water that’s been sitting all night. 💦
A lot of people will argue that they don’t do anything extra and their animals are fine. That’s totally ok if that’s what works for you. Many of the high production hybrid breeds like Golden Comets and Sexlinks handle these extreme temperatures easier than a breed like an Orpington or Brahma.
The humidity is making the high temperatures even harder on people and animals alike. Just pay attention and keep an eye out for signs of distress.
Stay cool everyone 😎
Yesterday we took a break and went over to @flattop_mtn_farm to cut lavender! It’s so calming to walk through rows of such a peaceful plant 🥰 We saw so many pollinators fluttering and buzzing around the field. To top it all off, we were able to learn a little bit about how they distill and make lavender essential oil. A great way to spend the hottest part of our Sunday ☀️ #lavender #herb #plant #bees #pollinators #essentialoil #distilling #flattopmountainfarm #supportsmallfarms #sunnydays
